Ruger Super Blackhawk Hunter Bisley 45 Colt

Ruger Super Blackhawk Hunter 45 Colt

The Ruger Super Blackhawk Hunter in 45 Colt was a great success.  The same gun with the Bisley gripframe really took this model to the pinnacle of hunting handguns.

The Ruger Hunter series was always a steady seller in the 44 Magnum.  Ask any 45 Colt fan and they will tell you that the only thing better than a 44 Magnum is a properly loaded 45 Colt!   In the larger Ruger frame the 45 Colt really turns from a mild "cowboy action" cartridge to a very efficient large bore hunting round.  For factory loads that take advantage of the 45 Colt's potential, check out Buffalo Bore Ammunition and Corbon.  For handloading info, Hodgdon got the ball rolling with the first "Ruger Only" loads section in their loading manuals.  Today, most of the loading manuals have a "Ruger Only" section and this gun is appropriate for those loads.

When it comes to handling and the increased recoil of the heavy 45 Colt loads, the Bisley gripframe really comes into its own.  Shooters seem to either love itor hate it, but most agree the Bisley handles the recoil better than the standard Ruger gripframe.  There is a strong contingency out there that has deemed this revolver as the ultimate Ruger hunting revolver and there is a lot of merit to that claim. There were two runs of this model.  The original run ran between 2005 to 2006 and consisted of 278 guns delivered.  Another 46 guns have trickled in between 2008 to 2010, most of which are part of the parts cleanup Ruger has been doing the last few years.  The Ruger Hunter, the Bisley gripframe, and the 45 Colt cartridge are a natural combination.

Recently, we have received an additional 68 of these guns in 2011 as part of another parts cleanup.  Note the change in the quantity produced.

Another 27 guns were received in 2012.  Note the change in quantity produced.

When these pop up, they go very fast and command a premium on the used market.
