We have a customer who wanted a quantity of Ruger Number 1's in 7.62X39mm. Back in 2003, 7.62X39mm was still dirt cheap to shoot and ballistically is pretty close to a 30-30. We went back and forth on the variation and it was agreed upon that something that was out of the ordinary would make it a special rifle. This was around the time that Ruger started making the stainless Number 1's with laminate stocks, but the stainless with walnut stock had never been done. The original run of 250 pieces sold very well, despite the odd ball caliber for a traditional single shot rifle. In 2005, Ruger came up with another 12 rifles (Ruger occasionally has "cleanup" guns from parts that are at the factory) and those were snapped up very fast. It was decided to make this configuration into a yearly run of a non-catalogued caliber and the "K1A Series" was born.
