With the tremendous success of the Flattop 44 Special, we had a lot of feedback on what the customers wanted next. The Ruger Vaquero chambered in 44 Special was repeatedly asked for and in 2010 we were able to bring four models to market.
This is the stainless steel 4-5/8" version. The polished stainless steel resembles the nickel finish of the old Colts. For those who like the rugged reliability of the Ruger single action along with the classic styling of the Colt Single Action Army, this is a tough combination to beat. For those who know and appreciate the virtues of the 44 Special, little explanation in necessary.
There is a little confusion on the markings on the 44 Special Vaqueros. In 2005, Ruger introduced the New Vaquero which incorporated a mid size frame similar in size to the Colt Single Action Army. Pre-2005 Vaqueros were built on the larger "44 Magnum" size frame. For whatever reason, Ruger marked the 44 Special models as Vaqueros not New Vaqueros. These are built on the smaller mid size, post 2005 frame size. Since these are the first 44 Special Vaqueros there is no worries of confusing strength levels of the different frame sizes like the 45 Colt might encounter. In all, its not a big deal, but we wanted to make sure everyone knows what they are getting. Whether you like Cowboy Action Shooting or just a stone reliable fixed sight field revolver, the 44 Special Vaquero is good to ride the river with.
